REDD demonstration activity
RSS supports the KFCP REDD demonstration activity funded and implemented by AusAid, the Australian Government Overseas Aid Program.
The objective of the Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP) is to develop and implement a program to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from peatlands. An independent Technical Panel was engaged to address scientific issues relating to peatland measurements and GHG emissions. The Group as a whole is intended to also function as part of a broader Technical Panel which will have the capacity to address other scientific issues including forest management and monitoring, remote sensing, baselines, the economics of REDD, forest governance and institutions, causes of deforestation and poverty.
The role of RSS is to guide the work group on Peat and greenhouse gas measurement and monitoring in all aspects of remote sensing and monitoring.
Tasks:
- Baseline concepts, approaches and methodology for estimation
- Methodology for estimating the temporal pattern of GHG emissions from the KFCP pilot
- Key reviews leading to gap analysis, and design of new research and inventory programs.
- Input to UNFCCC negotiations
