The scope of the consultancy for the Ministry of Forestry was capacity building in the Botswana Division of Forestry and to train local experts for carrying out forest resource inventories in the country. RSS designed three training modules on GIS and remote sensing with strong emphasis to the practical application in the field and day-to-day operations adapted to the specific conditions in Botswana.
Training and Capacity building included the following key elements:
- Review of the existing capabilities / requirements for forest inventory
- Design, planning and implementation of a forest inventory tadapted to different forest conditions (e.g. forest reserves, timber wood plantations)
- Conduct data sampling campaigns and instruct field campaign teams
- Develop and manipulate forest inventory databases
- Analyze forest inventory data by means of multivariate statistics
- Prepare inventory reports, create statistics and prepare forest management guidelines
- Use of Global Positioning Systems
- Apply GIS/ Remote Sensing, image interpretation and change detection
- Monitor and map Botswana forest resources
- Define frame conditions for future forest management in Botswana
