Ökologische Kartierung des Sebuku-Sembakung Nationalparks

The conservation status of Sebuku Sembakung as a national park was formally endorsed by the Government of Indonesia in 2004. The area is a complex mix of protected and production forests and oil palm plantations and covers the watershed and various habitats from sea level to the mountains, with a total area of 0.4 million ha. It is the only habitat for elephants in Kalimantan. Sebuku Sembakung has six different forest types including mangroves, tidal swamp forests, peat swamp forests, freshwater swamp forests, lowland evergreen forests and heath forests (kerangas).

RSS was given a contract by WWF to undertake an remote sensing study to prepare an ecological map of the national park area.

Tasks of RSS

  • Land cover classification based on satellite images (Landsat, SPOT, ERS-2)
  • Generation of a digital surface model based on repeat path JERS data (see paper)
  • Establishment of a GIS for NP management, monitoring and spatial planning
