Salonga National Park in the Democratic Repulic of Congo is the world?s second largest tropical rainforest national park and the largest in Africa. It is located in the center of the Congo river basin and is the habitat of many endemic endangered species, notably the bonobo (pygmy chimpanzee) and forest elephant. Forest cover 99% of the area, principal forest types are swamp, riverine, and dry-land forests. The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig (Germany) maintains a long-term bonobo study site outside the western boundary of the south block at Ipope. RSS was assigned a contract by MPI and GTZ to conduct a remote sensing based survey on the condition of the forest in the Park.
Tasks of RSS
- procurement and analysis of Landsat and JERS satellite imagery
- mapping of forest types and human impact on forests
- aerial video survey to document the condition of the forest
- setup of a GIS for spatial data management and spatial planning
- record and map the location of transect used for Bonobo research
