REDD pilot project development (FFI)
Fauna & Flora International (FFI), the oldest Nature Protection organization in the world and the Macquarie Bank have teamed up to form a Forest Carbon Task Force, which aims at the development and implementation of 6 REDD projects around the world. The task force aims at forest areas rich in carbon and biodiversity and builds on a strong collaboration with local stakeholders on all political levels (communities, local and district governments, national governments), as well as other NGO's to effectively reduce Greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and degradation.
The RSS team acts as a Master Consultant for the FFI/Macquarie Carbon task force in all aspects regarding remote sensing based carbon estimation, reference emission level (baseline) assessment, and long term carbon monitoring. RSS is currently involved in two FFI REDD project activities in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Tasks of RSS
- Methodology development for an integrated, remote sensing based, REDD monitoring
- Multi-scale calculation of historic carbon emission baseline scenario for the Kapuas Hulu district in West-Kalimantan
- Development and implementation of a carbon monitoring system based on very high resolution RapidEye data
- Monitoring forest degradation on the REDD sites with state-of-the art remote sensing techniques
- Estimation of below ground carbon storage in the peat swamp ecosystems located in the study areas using spaceborne digital elevation data
- Assessment of the fire history using satellite-based active fire data and Landsat-based image classification
- Capacity building for FFI project staff and partners
- Contribution of inputs to the Project Development Document (PDD) for the certification of the Project under the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS)
