DECOVER 2
DeCOVER 2 serves as the national extension of the GMES (Global Monitoring of Environment and Security) initiative and provides land cover information based on remote sensing, especially adapted to fulfill German user needs. The project also supports already existing land cover/use data systems at regional, national and international level. In general, there are two DeCOVER 2 services that address different sectors. The DeCOVER 2 Core Service aims at generating land cover/use information by the use of new satellite systems such as RapidEye and TerraSAR-X and focus on change detection techniques for updating existing land cover information products. The DeCOVER 2 Thematic Services, on the other hand, focus on innovative techniques for agricultural and environmental monitoring. All developed DeCOVER 2 services are developed according to the user needs and are also validated by users.
DeCOVER 2 project objectives
- development of change detection techniques for a targeted updating of existing land cover/use information through an automated processing chain
- synergetic use of new satellite sensors such as RapidEye and TerraSAR-X for a high resolution land cover/use mapping
- harmonizing various national and international land cover/use data sets by proving their interoperability
- development of innovative remote sensing services for agricultural and environmental monitoring in order to meet the identified user requirements
RSS tasks
DeCOVER 2 Core Service
- RSS is responsible for open semi-natural areas and water bodies
- development of remote sensing based change detection techniques
- extension of existing land cover/use information
DeCOVER 2 Thematic Service
- definition of environmental monitoring services in the context of NATURA 2000
- identification of user needs in the context of environmental monitoring
- following services are developed by RSS:
- monitoring concept for peatlands, including the monitoring of restoration measures
- mapping the condition of conservation areas, including shrub encroachment and change detection
- identifying grassland use intensity (on peat) for modelling greenhouse gas emissions in the context of national GHG reporting
- mapping of potential habitats in order to support Environmental Agencies in NATURA 2000 reporting
Funded by the German Space agency (DLR) with support of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).
