On behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) - German Technical Cooperation - RSS produced a collection of thematic maps covering the entire Amazon region including the watersheds of all major rivers and important adjacent ecosystems (East Andean, Pantanal, Llanos colombianos). The work included the survey and compilation of available data froma wide range of sources such as FAO, JRC, INPE, WCMC, GLC2000, UNEP, Forest Watch, CIFOR, IBAMA etc.). Different information layers were selected and processed into a common geoprojection and format using a GIS. The final atlas covered a wide range of topics such as protected areas, ecosystems, watersheds, land cover, logging and mining operation within the Amazonian region.
